This site is dedicated to the memory of Derek Fothergill.

Derek Fothergill, beloved husband of Pat and father of Steve, Phil, Caroline and Sarah; Grandpa to Ben, Jake and Cara and father in law to Anne, Charles and Nicky. Derek was born at 13 Russell Street in Washington to Dora Ann and Herburt William on 10th August 1934. Derek was a superb man, generous throughout and he made the world a brighter place. He started his working life as a scientist having completed a degree at Durham University and met his wife Pat in the Lake District whilst in his twenties and together with friends and family, he continued to enjoy climbing and fell walking throughout his life. Derek first worked for a short preiod with the Coal Board before starting a career with Anglo Great Lakes which spanned 38 years. He was devoted to Pat and his family and enjoyed over 53 years of marriage, including over 50 years living in Rowlands Gill. He loved a good conversation and spending time with friends. He worked and lived in Morganton in North Carolina from 1992 to 1999 and met many good friends there. He was an avid golfer including a year as Captain of the Seniors Team at Garesfield Golf Club. Derek passed away peacefully in his sleep at the Queen Elizabeth hospital on 7 September 2012 following admission to treat a chest infection and ongoing idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Derek would be pleased to know that with his passing, your contributions in support of research to better understand and treat idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis will help others in the future.
